We are living in unprecedented times. Over the last few days I've been reading about other great depressions or way of life altering times from history around the world. I first walked away encouraged at the resilience of the human spirit and also saw a pattern. These were the times that leaders stood up, led, innovated, developed a business strategy, took risks while becoming more conservative financially personally. We will get through this. The questions are....
1. Will you learn the lessons you have an opportunity to learn and implement them consistently?
Here are a few possible examples (have less or even no debt, have more cash reserves, untouched line of credit for emergencies, have multiple income streams both in your business and personally, know your numbers, have stronger online presence/marketing, have products or services that are in high demand when other part of your business slows, have better and real relationships with your clients and employees, have team cross trained in the event you lose someone or are forced to make layoffs) I'm sure you can think of many others.
2. Will this help you refocus on things that are truly important?
It seems like a lot of things we hold as important in society are being stripped away. Families are being "forced" to eat around the dinner table without sports on tv in the background, take walks, play board games, do puzzles, do bible studies, and pray together. Maybe this is an opportunity to build good new habits as a family and grow closer to each other and to God. My prayer is that these things remain and we all aren't sucked back into being distracted
I'm encouraged by seeing the generosity of business owners and leaders and how the majority are really fighting for their employees selflessly. This will pay huge dividends down the road. I love hearing about bookstores around the country being sold out of bibles. I love seeing all the facebook posts of families being together and people supporting one another.
And finally if you are stressed or experiencing anxiety during this time that is understandable, I will suggest time in prayer but also go out and help someone, deliver a meal, donate to a good cause, mow a seniors lawn, while on a family walk collect trash in neighborhood, make a grocery run for someone in need, send cards to people. I promise if you do something for someone else when you have nothing to gain from it you will gain a peace, decreased stress level, and increased joy and hope.
Be part of the solution.
